A Little Help, Please

Forget 70 percent off – all I want is a quick and easy shopping experience.

I yearn for the day when shopping was a luxury, something I enjoyed. But as a full-time working mother with two kids, shopping is usually something I squeeze in during my lunch break or in a mad dash on my way to picking up a child from daycare.

To help keep my wardrobe from becoming too outdated, I’ve tried online shopping. Other neighborhood moms and co-workers have mastered this, whereas I struggle, usually ending up with the wrong size or fit, thus hassling me with additional return fees.

As my family and I prepared to go on vacation last month, I stopped by White House | Black Market to pick up something summery. When I told the friendly sales associate that I was “just browsing,” she pointed to a rack near the door and said, “Here’s everything that’s new in the store this week. Let me know if you need help finding a size.”

Curiosity and joy filled my head. You mean, a quick look here and I, too, could know what’s “in”? It was as if the rack were beckoning: “Here, tired mother, add one of these items to your closet and you’ll feel like a million bucks.” I felt so happy when I left with my new purchases (and I still made it to daycare on time). And you can bet I’ve been back.

I know there’s a science to store layouts, maximizing dwell time and guiding shoppers to all the nooks and corners you want us to see. But there’s also something to be said about being upfront. It annoys me when I have to walk though my entire grocery store just to grab a gallon of milk. Make my apparel shopping just as laborious and I’ll likely head right back out the door. I don’t have the time (much less the energy). But put a rack of this week’s must-haves, a table of seasonal accessories or the pieces to a great outfit all in one area and I’m all yours.

Is asking for a little fashion assistance too much? Retailers have the time and I’ve got the money … just show me how to spend it.
