Maternity retailer opens Beverly Hills, Manhattan flagships

A Pea In The Pod, the maternity fashion designer and retailer, has begun the rollout of its new large-format luxury concept with two new flagship stores, in Beverly Hills, Calif., and on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

The Beverly Hills unit, on North Beverly Drive, is a 2000-square-foot, two-story location. The New York unit, also two stories, is at 3300 square feet the largest luxury maternity store in the country. The stores are part of a brand renovation the retailer is developing, including four new stores in the fall and a complete redesign of the company's existing 37 boutiques. Cowan & Associates (Worthington, Ohio) has been the architecture and design firm that developed and implemented the concept.

According to the retailer, the new concept is “literally a store on wheels . . . a powerful, complex modular concept, engineered from the simplest elemental components to attain an elegant, minimalist look. The clothing fixtures, dressing rooms, seating areas, even the wrap desk, are all of a kind, all mobile, all on bold, black casters for a completely flexible layout that can move and breathe with the comings and goings of the season's styles. The luxury European finish glass-beaded stainless steel fixtures constitute a modular system that incorporates frosted glass shelving for folded presentation.

“The result is elegant, using only four materials, cool in color, quiet in tone. Eggshell white walls and ceilings, gray tile borders, taupe carpeting and canvas dressing room walls laced to stainless steel frames exude an urbane ambiance. You might call it 'SoHo with designer level fit and finishes.'”

There's also a custom-designed lighting system of micro-miniaturized, hemispherical spotlights; galleries built into the clothing fixtures that includes original painting and sculpture, photographs and old master prints.

A Pea In The Pod is a division of Mothers Work, Inc. (Philadelphia), which operates a total of 770 stores in 50 states under the A Pea In The Pod, Mimi Maternity and Motherhood Maternity nameplates.
