Circuit City buys assets of Internet rival

Published

on

Circuit City Stores Inc. (Richmond, Va.) is buying assets of 800.com, a Portland, Ore.-based online consumer electronics retailer. The agreement includes the sale of 800.com's customer database and other marketing tools. No orders can be taken from the 800.com site, and visitors are redirected to CircuitCity.com.

“Given the harsh economic climate, continuing to operate independently is no longer viable,” said Greg Drew, president, ceo and founder of 800.com. Circuit City will offer 800.com customers the option to pick up goods bought from the obsolete Internet shop at its own stores.

Circuit City is the second largest electronics retailer in the U.S., behind Best Buy, with about 630 locations nationwide.
