Amazon Offers 3-D Printing

Shoppers can customize items

Yesterday, Amazon.com Inc. (Seattle) launched a 3-D printing marketplace, offering customers more than 200 print-on-demand products. Utilizing materials such as plastic or metal, the printers create a customized product for the customer, then package and ship the item as it would other goods.

Most of the Amazon 3-D offerings are jewelry, including a knotty ring from Mixee Labs, printed in bronze-infused stainless steel. Shoppers can customize the item’s color, size, and other features.

Speaking to Women’s Wear Daily, Petra Schindler-Carter, director for Amazon Marketplace sales, says, “This is the first time on Amazon that we’ve built such an experience that allows users to leave their own mark on a product.”
