Visitors to Anne Geddes’ web site can see what her first store looks like via a live web-cam. Anyone clicking on that link is likely to encounter lots of moms navigating the space, with children either toddling along or riding in a stroller.
With its merchandise lines of baby clothes and Geddes photos, this is clearly a store that needs to be kid-friendly. To help create that environment, designers at Kanner Architects (Santa Monica, Calif.) outfitted the space with round fixtures.
“The roundness of the fixtures facilitates consumer foot traffic and makes them child-safe,” notes Stephen Kanner, the firm’s design director.
The fixtures, which are made of either natural veneer or man-made teak (and, in some cases, a combination of the two), were built in different configurations for displaying all the various categories of merchandise: bedding, books, posters, silverware and watches. Some have glass tops with merchandise encased beneath, while others have wooden tops with merchandise sitting on them. Merchandise can also be displayed on upper-level side shelving, while inventory is kept behind closed doors around the bottom of the fixtures.
To help give the space a homey feel, its cashwrap and wall shelving are outfitted in a matching teak, and the seating area is laid out to resemble a family room.
