The newest H&M Clothing Store, a 30,000-square-foot location in Massapequa, N.Y., has been completed and is due to open in the Sunrise Mall.

According to Andy Frankl, president of Ibex Construction (New York), the project management firm, “the interior finishes at the store are typical of the clean modern look that has become an integral part of its trademark: marble and wood floors for the aisles and selling areas respectively; sheer clean walls that rise to white ceilings accented by neon-lit soffitts; and sleek dressing rooms with motion-sensitive lighting to allow the shopper to view themselves in the adjustable wrap-around mirrors.”

H&M, the Swedish “cheap chic: apparel retailer that has grown to over 600 stores in 14 countries, is in the midst of a U.S. expansion program calling for 20 new stores in the U.S. this year and 55 more over the next two years. That would give H&M 85 stores in the U.S. by the end of 2003.

H&M opened its first women's clothing store – Hennes (Swedish for “hers” — in Stockholm in 1947. It later bought the Swedish hunting and men's clothing store Mauritz Widforss.

Ibex Construction is currently serving as construction manager on a number of high-profile retail projects, including several Nordstrom stores along the East Coast of the U.S., Lucky Brand Dungarees nationally and Macy's in New York's Queens Center and Queens Plaza.
