Bergdorf Cancels Fall Orders

Neiman Marcus is said to be following suit

Bergdorf Goodman, the New York luxury retailer, has told some of its suppliers that it will be canceling the remainder of its fall orders in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.

The two-store unit of Dallas-based Neiman Marcus Group sent about 1000 letters to vendors telling them that it was canceling the remaining portion of fall orders, with the exception of special orders, and was scaling back “resort” and spring orders.

Its sister company, Neiman Marcus – operator of 33 specialty stores, with two new very recent openings, in Dallas and Tampa — was also reportedly canceling certain orders.

At least one of Bergdorf's vendors was reported to have said it was ignoring the letter and would continue to send early-October shipments. The orders were referred to by the vendor as “legal” commitments. No dollar value on the cancelations was given.

Federated Department Stores (Cincinnati), the nation's biggest department store organization, said it was still reviewing the remainder of its fall orders and wouldn't make a decision for another week or two.
