Goal to have 10,000 in operation by the end of the year

Dallas-based Blockbuster Inc. is planning to roll out 7000 branded Blockbuster Express video rental kiosks nationwide this summer. The effort is through a licensing deal with ATM-machine maker NCR Corp. The kiosks will be located mainly inside supermarkets and outside convenience stores.

The company started experimenting with the concept, dominated by Redbox, with 40 units installed in stores last year, according to Alex Camara, vp and general manager, NCR Entertainment.

NCR (Duluth, Ga.) will manage the boxes, including stocking them with DVDs, and splitting the revenue earned from the kiosks with Blockbuster. The kiosks offer DVD rentals for $1 a day, similar to Redbox, but will make a departure from competitors by moving to sell DVDs starting in July.
