Tucci, Segrete + Rosen, New York

To affirm its commitment to downtown Manhattan, Bloomingdale’s selected the building formerly occupied by Canal Jeans as its satellite flagship in New York. The 90,000-square-foot mid-19th Century brick building on lower Broadway needed some work, but it had solid architectural bones that designers at the now-defunct Tucci, Segrete + Rosen used to full advantage when creating the space.

Building on the idea of a “visual storyline,” designers at Bloomingdale’s and TS+R blended exposed brick walls, oak flooring and tin ceilings with contemporary materials and functional displays to give the six-story space interest on every level. Designers maximized light by refurbishing existing skylights and light wells, uncovering previously concealed windows, installing a new double-wide entrance on Crosby Street and creating a three-story atrium at the Broadway entrance. Pink cosmetic bars and checkerboard flooring make an impression at the main-floor cosmetics area, while a pale blue palette and black and white photographs mark the third-floor contemporary collection. In the lower-level men’s department, graffiti-style hand-painted murals give the space a retro-80s feel.
