The Bombay Co. Inc. (Fort Worth, Texas) has reported a 9 percent increase in revenues for the four-week period ended April 30, 2005. Same-store sales increased 7 percent.

For the 13 weeks ended April 30, revenues decreased 1 percent and same-store sales declined 5 percent.

“We were pleased with April’s sales results and our return to positive comps,” said chairman and ceo James Carreker. “We benefited from the additional selling day with the shift of Easter from April last year into March this year which accounted for 4 – 5 percent of the improvement in same-store sales for the month. Sales momentum improved steadily through the month, with increases in most categories and particularly strong results in wall decor, occasional furniture and lamps. We expect to sustain this momentum as we provide value offerings and continue to land fresh inventory in our stores, especially in our core furniture categories.”

Carreker further noted that consumer demand remains challenging. “April sales trends were encouraging but not sufficient to offset the de-leveraging effects caused by weaker-than-expected sales results in February and March.”
