Two California locations will remain open

Citing a challenging economic climate, The Walt Disney Co. (Burbank, Calif.) announced it’s closing five of its seven ESPN Zone restaurants, according to The New York Times.

Locations in Baltimore, Chicago, Las Vegas, New York and Washington are expected to close next week, reports cable sports network ESPN, which is controlled by Disney. Two locations, in Los Angeles and Anaheim, Calif., are run by Anschutz Entertainment Group and Zone Enterprises and will remain open, says ESPN.

“This was a very difficult decision to make” says Rick Alessandri, senior vp, ESPN, reports The Times. “But it was the right decision to make.”

Disney opened the sports-themed chain 12 years ago. The restaurants, which averaged 30,000 square feet, were split into three sections, including a “studio grill” for dining, a “screening room” for watching ESPN sports coverage and a “sports arena” for playing interactive games. The 50,000-square-foot location in Times Square was the biggest.
