New York mayor Michael Bloomberg will cut the ribbon when Ann Taylor (New York) opens its new Ann Taylor Loft store near Wall Street on April 22, 2002. It will be the first brand-name retail store to open in downtown Manhattan since Sept. 11, 2001.

The 6300-square-foot store is centered in the heart of the Wall Street financial district, at 2 Broadway (and Beaver Street). Ann Taylor Loft is the second brand expression of Ann Taylor, relaxed business and dressy casual apparel, footwear and accessories with an emphasis is on value.

“I am proud that Ann Taylor Loft has decided to expand into lower Manhattan,” said Bloomberg. “[It] will set a precedent for other retail companies when considering business expansions, which is exactly what the downtown area needs. In addition, it fills a need as it is the only women's brand named clothing store in the vicinity.”

“The downtown area needs to be revitalized with new businesses so it can once again be known as the heart of New York City,” said Carl Weisbrod, president of the Alliance for Downtown New York. “We hope it encourages more companies to do the same.”

Kay Krill, president of Ann Taylor Loft, said the company will also make a contribution to The New York Police & Fire Widows'& Children's Benefit Fund, a non-profit organization that assists the families of fallen New York City firefighters and police officers.
