(NEW YORK, NY) October 14, 2014 – Dwell on Design, Dwell Media’s flagship annual event and the largest design event in the U.S., made its New York debut in an entirely new form last week. The unique event, curated by the editors of Dwell magazine, kicked off with Dwell Design Week events October 6-8 at Miele, Rolf Benz and AKA’s Central Park Property. The design community then convened at 82Mercer in SoHo October 9-11, with nearly 4,000 members of the design elite filtering through over the course of the three days. The design summit featured editor-led discussions onstage and in intimate discussion areas that focused on New York’s most relevant design topics with industry experts, thought leaders, and visionaries in fields that spanned from architecture to transit and hospitality.

Dwell on Design NY took a modified approach from its west coast counterpart, becoming a place for movers and shakers of the design, landscape, architecture and civic communities to get together, exchange ideas, and address important issues rapidly evolving in New York. Onstage programs covered topics such as “Healthy Architecture,” “The New Malleable Office,” “Re-imagining New York City’s Terra Firma,” Architecture for   Humanity’s “Design Like You Give a Damn: LIVE!,” “Preservation Nation,” and the “Architecture of Loss.”

“One of our esteemed presenters commented that the discussion areas were like blogs, because blogs are like conversations—very approachable. I just love that, it means we were successful,” said Dwell President and CEO Michela O’Connor Abrams. “The impetus for Dwell on Design NY was to continue conversations about important topics like resiliency, innovation, transit and public spaces and to do it in a way that was approachable and created opportunities for discussion. Together with installations from 18 world-class brands, the first Dwell on Design NY was a resounding success. The feedback from attendees was equally validating, they were excited to be able to talk with leaders in the industry and interact with these special brands. We’re keeping the momentum going and are already busy planning what’s in store for 2015.”

Dwell on Design NY 2014 highlights included:

  • Keynote speaker Daniel Libeskind, who highlighted his design history, from early building influences to his own drawings. Dwell Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dameron joined Libeskind onstage to discuss his works, ranging from the Military History Museum in Dresden and the master plan for the rebuilt World Trade Center site in New York to the Jewish museums in Berlin, Copenhagen, and San Francisco. Attendees surrounded the “starchitect” following his discussion, seeking photos and autographs, with some traveling as far as Brazil just to hear him speak.
  • Other speakers included international landscape designer Margie Ruddick speaking on the future of conservation and stewardship, Caroline Baumann of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum who offered a sneak peak into the museum’s $91-million renovation and showcased the new Cooper Hewitt typeface—available for download on their site, Clive Wilkinson, creator of the 125-seat “Superdesk” concept for the NY-based ad agency Barbarian Group, as well as mind-bending office environments for Google and TBWA/Chiat/Day, and industry leaders like Pentagram Partner Michael Bierut, Dan Simons of CitiBike and Brad Wilson of the Ace Hotel Group, among many others.

  • Big name brands, such as Volvo Cars of North America, Marvin Windows and Doors, IKEA, Marimekko, Raydoor, Resource Furniture, WeWork and Blu Homes exhibited innovative and interactive installations. Some notable installations included Marimekko’s colorful discussion area with reams of their signature prints hanging from the ceiling, Marvin Windows and Doors custom installation designed by architect Joseph Tanney of Resolution: 4 Architecture, Plant Wall Design’s four-by-eight foot vertical plant wall packed with native species, Blu Homes 3-D virtual home tour using Oculus Rift technology and Resource Furniture’s 240 square foot hotel concept room, dubbed “Hotel Resource.”
  • Design Like you Give a Damn: LIVE!, Architecture for Humanity’s annual conference focused on the ways design can impact society—improving the health, environment, economy, and overall well-being of communities now and into the future. The event included daily discussion area programming and the annual Design Open Mic, a rapid-pace, back-to-back presentation of established designers and architects who presented their humanitarian projects. Twenty-eight finalists from around the world presented at Design Open Mic on Saturday, showcasing projects that focused on six different categories: health and education, disaster recovery, political discourse, community engagement, materials and sustainability, and building fabric. The speeches will appear on the AfH channel and PechaKucha website.

  • Following its June debut at Dwell on Design LA, the Dwell Store installation featured a dining room tablescape, successfully bringing the image of a Dwell dining room to life. The installation celebrated the concept of contextualized commerce by showcasing products and telling the stories behind them. Featuring six vignettes that displayed iconic midcentury products alongside new design brands, the installation took a look inward by highlighting key moments in the stories of each brand, designer and product.
  • Dwell Manhattan Home Tours allowed individuals to tour five unique Manhattan homes from SoHo to Harlem as well as attend the ever-popular and standing room only Meet the Architects Night. At Meet the Architects, the five architects and designers behind the homes shared insight on the projects, materials, design process and how they met the varied needs of the homeowners.
  • The show was wrapped up with a celebration and presentation of the second annual Dwell Vision Award. Sponsored by Volvo Cars of North America, the award was presented to Architecture for Humanity in recognition of their 15 years of humanitarian service, innovation within the design community and vision for the future. The award ceremony began with a wine tasting from Chapter 24 Vineyards and concluded with a live auction featuring five items that included once in a lifetime curated trips to Sweden, Dwell on Design LA, Charley Harper’s home and studio in Cincinnati, OH, architect Louis Kahn’s final residential commission in Pennsylvania, and Raydoor sliding doors designed by graffiti artist George “SEN-One” Murillo. The auction and evening benefited Architecture for Humanity and raised thousands of dollars for the organization. “Receiving the Dwell Vision Award on behalf of Architecture for Humanity was an amazing honor, as was being able to partner with Dwell Media on this amazing event,” remarked Executive Director Eric Cesal. “Dwell on Design celebrates all the ways in which design improves lives—an ideal for which Architecture for Humanity has stood all along.”

The conference took place during AIANY’s Archtober—a month-long architecture and design festival now in its fourth year—of which Dwell is the presenting media sponsor for the third consecutive year.
