Forty years after launching into the health food business with his Great Earth Vitamins store, Bernie Bubman, along with son Noah, sought to branch out with EarthBar, an organic super food concept. Naturally, a green design was the way to go.

Working with AkarStudios (Santa Monica, Calif.), designers incorporated concrete flooring, soy-based stains and energy-efficient lighting, including LEDs, fluorescent and metal halide fixtures, into the prototype design.

All of the shelving components have an inner core of recycled and formaldehyde-free MDF that’s covered in bamboo veneer with a soy-based stain. Printed messages highlighting the benefits of a healthy and organic lifestyle are incorporated into a custom-designed wallpaper with an olive green background that gives the store a visual boost.

“The various design elements collectively convey the ‘organic, natural and green’ message to the consumers,” says AkarStudios’ principal Sat Garg.
