Filene's Basement (Boston) announced plans to close its Sixth Avenue location in Manhattan. The store, known for its annual Running-of-the-Brides discounted wedding-dress event, will shutter its doors by the end of March, according to a notice filed with the New York State Department of Labor.
Parent company Syms Corp. (Secaucus, N.J.) made the decision after it unable to agree on terms to extend the site’s lease, according to the filing. A spokeswoman for Syms, Davia Temin, says the company is actively pursuing another site already. The Sixth Avenue location, between West 18th and 19th streets, measures 145,000 square feet.
Syms bought Filene’s at auction in June after the discount retailer emerged from bankruptcy in early 2009.
