Fortunoff Jewelry Vying for Comeback

A granddaughter of the founders of the Fortunoff retail chain is hoping for a rebirth of its Fortunoff jewelry stores, which originally began operating in Brooklyn in 1922.

The company closed its New York area doors and filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and 2009. Fortunoff granddaughter Esther Fortunoff created an online jewelry site in 2010 to revive the brand.

This week, a 1900-square-foot Fortunoff Fine Jewelry brick-and-mortar store will open in Westbury, New York. According to NorthJersey.com, Fortunoff is hoping this will lead to bigger things, including a future store in North Jersey, where the family first began its expansion outside of New York, with stores in Paramus and Wayne.
