Poor 1Q sales still beat analysts’ expectations

Harley-Davidson Inc. (Milwaukee) reported first-quarter earnings dropped 37 percent, leading the motorcycle company to announce another 300 to 400 jobs cut, in addition to the 1100 cuts announced in January.
"We don't make any job reduction decisions lightly," outgoing ceo Jim Ziemer said in a statement. "But based on further planning since January and a deeper analysis of our production requirements, we have now determined that fewer production employees will be required."
The company says it plans to ship 264,000 to 273,000 motorcycles to its dealers in 2009, a 10 percent drop from 2008.
