When Jackrabbit Toys opened on the New Jersey shore, it had to make a splash among both its upscale retail neighbors and upscale clientele. The specialty store needed a design that would set it apart from the traditional toddler-centric toy shops and convey the Jackrabbit brand as contemporary and inviting. So owner Tracy Kuchar chose Visconti Design Associates (Oakland, N.J.) to bring a visually sophisticated look to the 3500-square-foot space that would reflect the playful and warm nature of the toys.

The design team focused on a bold, geometric silhouette with tones of bright red, blue and orange, along with rich mahogany, to offset angular architecture and touches of galvanized steel.

Anchoring Jackrabbit’s design are orange, carrot-like pillars that intersect low-hanging ceiling planes housing accent lighting. The individual pillars are punctured with illuminated portholes used for displaying merchandise – a geometric ingredient that design principal Chris Visconti considers “the nexus of the design.”

Red wall fixtures with asymmetrical shelves feature a series of cut-out circles to mirror the portholes, while a curved gondola and cashwrap function as contrasts to the structural layout. Flooring is visually distinct in the center aisle with alternating wood tones to draw visitors further into the space.

Jackrabbit’s icon, a child-like rendering of a floppy-eared rabbit, combines sharp lines, circles and ovals for a youthful yet modern geometric balance.
