You’ve worked with three titans in the industry: Peter Marino, Ralph Lauren and Simon Doonan. What did you take away from each?

From Peter, I learned about the power of raw talent; from Ralph, the importance of consistently pushing the envelope creatively; and from Simon, I learned that humor is as important as beauty.

How do Ralph Lauren’s designs influence your own?

Ralph Lauren has always been able to create a connection to every world he forms. Whether it’s on the ranch or in the boardroom, you feel that it’s a place you want to be part of. I am constantly exploring ways to create similar emotional ties on the projects I design.

What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the name Simon Doonan?
Wit. The taste, luxury and humor mantra of Barneys is a direct reflection of Simon.

What has been the highlight of working with Barneys?
The high level of trust that has been created over time. I have a deep understanding for the brand and Barneys knows I always try to find the most creative solution to evolve and elevate its image.

You’d have to be pretty creative to elevate a retailer whose motto is “Taste, Luxury, Humor.” How do those words inspire you to brainstorm design concepts?
I constantly ask myself how the design reinforces that concept. I try to deliver the taste and luxury, but I leave the humor to Barneys’ visual team. I think it gets a little tricky to make more-permanent design elements too witty.

What’s your favorite store design trend right now?
The move away from the “cookie cutter” approach. I think it’s critical that each project offers something unique to its specific location. This approach may not be possible for every store in a rollout, but it can be addressed for the most important stores in the fleet.

What’s the most touristy thing you’ve ever done in New York?
I love the Circle Line cruise. It’s a great, relaxed way to view the city from the water. The views give you a sense of how concentrated and remarkable New York is.

What word or phrase would you like never to hear again?
“How can we get it cheaper?”

What one food item do you know you should stop eating, but won’t?
Ribeye steak, medium rare. But I’m from Texas, so eating beef is akin to a religious experience.
