Sportmart founders buy Chicago flagship building

The Hochberg family, which founded Chicago-area sporting goods retailer Sportmart Inc. and owned it until 1998 — when it was sold to Gart Sports Co. (Denver) — has purchased the eight-story building on North LaSalle Street in Chicago that houses the flagship location.

The family, which still owns a number of Sportmart stores in the Chicago area under the terms of the Gart buyout, also renegotiated leases for a total of 291,000 square feet occupied by Sportmart stores in Chicago, Calumet City, Lombard, Niles and North Riverside, Ill., and Merrillville, Ind.
