Loblaw Closing 52 Grocery Stores

Shuttering underperforming stores to make way for future expansion

Published

on

Loblaw Cos. Ltd. (Brampton, Ontario) announced that it will be closing 52 of its grocery stores throughout Canada. The closures are expected to take place over the next year and will affect the chain’s least profitable locations, though specifics have not yet been released about all of the stores expected to close.

According to Financial Post, these closures are intended to make the chain more efficient. In a typical year, it usually closes between 10 and 15 stores. In spite of the closures, the chain expects to expand and grow its network in the future, but is currently watching the market and taking note of consumer trends, such as discount-store shopping, before making any definitive decisions.
