HIRINGS/PROMOTIONS
Liz Claiborne Inc (New York), a designer and marketer of retail brands, has hired David DeMattei as ceo of its Lucky Brand Jeans unit. DeMattei replaces Tom Fitzgerald, who left the company. Claiborne also hired Patrick Wade as its executive vice president and creative director.
Starbucks Coffee Co. (Seattle), a roaster and retailer of specialty coffee, has promoted John Culver to president of its international unit. Culver replaces Martin Coles, who resigned to pursue new opportunities.
Carter’s Inc. (Atlanta), a provider of baby and children’s clothing under the Carter’s and OshKosh B’gosh brands, has appointed Vanessa Castagna to its board of directors. Castagna’s career includes stints at Mervyn’s, JCPenney, Target, Walmart and Marshall’s.
Shopster.com (San Francisco), a provider of e-commerce solutions for retailers, has appointed PayPal vp Dickson Chu to its board of directors.
Testrite Visual (Hackensack, N.J.), a manufacturer of graphic display hardware, has appointed Ken Allen vp of retail and brand development.
STORE OPENINGS
American Apparel (Los Angeles), a clothing retailer and distributor, has opened its first American Apparel Kids store, in Berlin.
Petland Inc (Chillicothe, Ohio), a pet products retailer, opened its first smaller-format store in Hillsboro, Ohio.
Sprint Nextel (Overland Park, Kan.), a telecommunications provider and retailer, opened its first environmentally friendly store in Houston. The store incorporates such sustainable design elements such as energy-efficient lighting fixtures and low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint and carpet.
Whole Foods Market (Austin, Texas), an organic and natural foods grocer, plans to open a store next year in Bella Terra, an open-air retail center in Huntington Beach, Calif.
BUSINESS BRIEFS
Kohl’s Department Stores (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) announced it has become the first retailer to commit to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, in accordance with the U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders program.
AWARDS
Professional Communications Systems (Butler, Wis.), a specialist in broadcast, audiovisual and video communications applications, and Microspace Communications Corp. (Raleigh, N.C.), a provider of business television networks, won DIGI awards at the recent Digital Signage Show in New York. The awards recognize creative and technologically advanced uses of digital signage.
Gemini Inc. (Cannon Falls, Minn.), a manufacturer of letters, logos and plaques for the sign industry, received its second Safety and Health Recognition Award from the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration Consultation.
