Manhattan, Straight Up

The annual Retail Design Collective comes to the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York, Dec. 3-5

The store design industry will gather in New York again next month, as it has every December for decades.

A.R.E.’s Retail Design Collective, December 3-5, will visit all the regular haunts – industry showrooms, dazzling holiday displays and the annual PAVE Gala – from a new home: The Metropolitan Pavilion at 123 W. 18th St., between Sixth and Seventh avenues.

While the focus of the trip to Manhattan always includes the city’s notable holiday windows up and down Fifth and Madison avenues and from the East Side (Bloomingdale’s) to the West Side (Macy’s), RDC will extend the focus internationally with a presentation on “Window Display Trends from Around the World.

VMSD editor-in-chief Patricia Sheehan will moderate as presenters Jon Harari and Michael Niemtzow of WindowsWear, the New York-based fashion technology company, take attendees on a worldwide exploration of displays from Paris, Milan, London, Barcelona and New York.

From Oxford Street to Rue de Rivoli to Via Montenapoleone, the Old World still creates exciting, festive, elegant holiday windows that U.S. visual merchandisers and designers will be inspired by.

The VMSD-moderated presentation will take place Friday, December 5 at 9:30 a.m. at the Metropolitan Pavilion, one of three days of educational sessions. There will be a full sit-down networking breakfast beginning at 8:30. Continental breakfasts are available the other two mornings.

This year’s event will also feature a free WindowsWear fashion window walking tour for the first 50 registrants, to be held Thursday, December 4, at 3 p.m.

The New York showrooms will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, and will sponsor their own networking parties on Thursday evening, December 4, starting at 6 p.m.

The PAVE Gala will be held Wednesday, December 3, at 6:30 p.m., at Cipriani Wall Street.
