McDonald’s Tests Green Restaurants

Ten locations exploring energy-saving and waste-reduction technology

McDonald’s Corp. (Oak Brook, Ill.) is using 10 prototype green restaurants as “learning laboratories,” says McDonald’s vp, corporate social responsibility Bob Langert.

One green restaurant in Chicago consumes 25 percent less energy than similar locations. A location in Cary, N.C., incorporates LED lighting and low-flow toilets, uses eco-friendly materials such as counters made of recycled glass and concrete, and provides electric car charging stations. The location hopes to achieve LEED gold certification from the USGBC.

In May, McDonald’s began an effort to show consumers its “greener” side with a new institutional marketing effort, “Global Best of Green.” Langert told DailyFinance that energy savings and waste reduction are central to McDonald’s corporate social responsibility strategy.

This should be great. Knowing that Mcdonalds is one of the world's leading and most famous fastfood chains in the world is taking a huge step into making their restaurants more environment-friendly should send a message to its competitors to have a friendly competition on who is the greenest of them all.

Mcdonalds really is a trend setter. I do hope that they continue what they have started with its "green restaurants" projects so that all of their restaurants would be green and environmentally safe. I'm a huge fan of mother nature and a huge fan of Mcdonalds. I do hope that both of them can get along.

I'm not really surprised that McDonalds did this. The branches in my locality are doing everything they can to promote a healthier and cleaner environment. They segregate trash and they teach people the value of recycling, which is one of the reasons why I really love mcdonalds.

I've always loved Mcdonalds ever since I was a child. It's the atmosphere that really entices me to eat there, even if people say that the food is jampacked with calories. Hearing them experimenting on a green restaurant is like music to my ears.
