Retailer breaks ground for new North Carolina store

Despite its highly publicized plans to slow down on new store construction in 2001, Nordstrom Inc. (Seattle) announced the start of construction of a new store at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham, N.C. The 150,000-square-foot store, the retailer's first in North Carolina, is scheduled to open in March 2002.

The store's exterior will be Georgian architecture with brick masonry wrapped around the entire building. A three-story tower with windows will be the focal point at the main entrance of the store. A translucent lighting element and projecting canopies will be the prominent design features anchoring the store.

The two-level store will have the usual Nordstrom complement of cosmetics, accessories, shoes, handbags, kids'wear and its men's shop on the first floor; and all the traditional and modern women's apparel brands – Point of View, Studio 121, Narrative, Personal Touch, Individualist, T.B.D., Savvy, Encore and Brass Plum on the second. Floor. After a bad 2000 performance, the retailer has been struggling with the decision over how much sales space to give to its more contemporary merchandise. There was some thought that some of its strategies geared toward younger customers were turning off its usually loyal, traditionally conservative customer base.

Nordstrom has 121 U.S. stores in 24 states, including 78 full-line stores, 37 Nordstrom Racks, three Faconnable boutiques, two freestanding shoe stores and a clearance store. Nordstrom also operates 20 Faconnable boutiques throughout Europe. It has lately been much more aggressive in expanding its Nordstrom Rack stores than before.
