Major pet supply retailers PetSmart Inc. (Phoenix) and Petco Animal Supplies (San Diego) have both announced plans to focus on smaller brick-and-mortar locations, serving smaller regions than they have in the past.

Petco intends to continue adding to its current 128 smaller locations that measure around 5000 square feet. PetSmart has been testing 12 smaller stores measuring around 6000 square feet and has announced it will be adding another 20 locations.

Pet Product News reports the move to smaller stores emphasizes both chains’ commitments to growing e-commerce divisions. Both chains have reported that online sales have risen dramatically, and both intend to focus on growing online sales.
