Plans store in Puck Building for fall 2011
Seattle-based Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) has signed a 15-year lease for a 39,000-square-foot flagship store in the Puck Building. The location, at 295 Lafayette Street on the corner of East Houston Street, is the outdoor gear and apparel retailer’s first in Manhattan.
The multi-level store will include 14,000 square feet on the ground floor and 25,000 square feet divided among two other levels. Competitor Eastern Mountain Sports (Peterborough, N.H.) operates a store three blocks from the proposed site.
“Our new store in the Puck Building will provide a resource to serve New Yorkers, visitors and community groups eager to enjoy the great outdoors from bike paths and urban greenways to wild and scenic destinations around the world,” says Sally Jewel, chief executive of REI, in a statement.
