Retail Sales Up in June

(July 2009) posted on Tue Jul 14, 2009

Second straight month of sales increase attributed to gasoline station sales, auto purchases and electronics sales

According to the U.S. Commerce Department, total retail sales in June rose 0.6 percent, compared with May's gain of 0.5 percent. Sales excluding autos and auto parts also rose 0.3 percent, compared to a 0.5 percent increase in May.

The department reports that auto sales rose 2.3 percent in June, while gasoline station sales increased 5 percent and electronics sales rose 0.9 percent. Other sectors showing growth included sporting and music stores, with sales increasing 0.9 percent in both.

Most other retail categories, however, reported sales declines, including the clothing sector where sales were flat. Department stores continue to struggle as sales decreased 1.3 percent in June.
