Retailers Issue Conservative Sales Projections

Favorable gas, unemployment figures not enough to impact retail sales

While the U.S. has encountered lower fuel prices and unemployment rates in recent months, retailers have not experienced resultant increased spending, according to Women’s Wear Daily.

Reports last week from several companies, including Gap Inc. (San Francisco), Kohl’s Corp. (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and Ross Stores (Dublin, Calif.), stated that 2015 sales will be hampered by currency exchanges, a West Coast ports slowdown that ended just last week and harsh winter weather in the first quarter of the year.

The retailers also said that large expenditures on technology and omnichannel initiatives are expected to cut into profits.
