Rite Aid Same-Store Sales Drop

Front-end and pharmacy sales show declines


Rite Aid Corp. (Camp Hill, Pa.) announced its same-store sales for the four weeks ended December 26, 2009, dropped 1.8 percent over the prior-year period. Among its product categories, front-end same store sales decreased 2.3 percent, while pharmacy same store sales declined 1.5 percent.

Total drugstore sales for the four-week period were down 3.0 percent to $2.091 billion, compared to $2.155 billion last year. Prescription revenue accounted for 62.7 percent of drugstore sales, and third party prescription revenue represented 96.2 percent of pharmacy sales.

For the year, the drugstore chain says comparable store sales were down 0.5 percent and total drugstore sales dropped 2 percent.

At the end of 2009, Rite Aid operated 4801 stores compared to 4915 stores a year ago.
