Survey says most shopper will be discarding their holiday budgets

An online survey conducted earlier this month by Taubman Centers (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) suggests consumers will be more active in the holiday shopping market than they had planned to be.
The Internet survey, conducted the week of November 19 on the web sites of Taubman's various shopping center properties, asked people how they were planning to manage their holiday gift spending. And more than two-thirds of the respondents said they expected to stick to their holiday gift budgets this year.
Roughly 40 percent said they planned to shop with a loose budget in mind but remain flexible. Another 10 percent said that while they would set strict budgets, they knew full well that they'll never stick to them.
Nearly 19 percent said they planned to "buy now and worry later."
And the survey showed that Midwest shoppers expressed the greatest determination to set a budget and stick to it, while California shoppers were the most apt to throw caution to the wind.
Taubman Centers is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that -- through The Taubman Realty Group -- owns and develops regional shopping centers in seven states with a portfolio of over 15 shopping centers, mostly "super-regional" centers with some 1 million square feet of gross leasable area. Taubman Centers also has major new malls in development and manages about a dozen additional shopping centers for third parties.
