Sonia Rykiel (Paris) unveiled a revamped store design when it recently opened its first U.S. store on New York’s Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side.

Designed in part by Julie de Libran, the brand’s artistic director, the store’s design is meant to evoke “the essence of the bohemian intellectual,” reports Observer. That is why the store features red-laquered shelves stocked with 15,000 vintage books along its interior walls and even within the dressing rooms.

Flooring includes black-and-white tiles and carpet festooned with images of lips, cigarettes, books and pencils. There are also black leather couches purchased at a Parisian flea market, and the design team also worked with perfumer Daniela Andrier to create a custom scent for the store that features hints of rosewater, mandarin, vetiver and jasmine.
