Starbucks Reclamation Drive-Thru

Converting shipping containers to walk-thru, drive-thru shops

Published

Recycled shipping containers have been transformed into several new uses over the years, from pop-up stores to art exhibits. Now, Starbucks Coffee Co. is using these large boxes of steel as a place to grab a cup of joe.

Called Reclamation Drive-Thru, the Seattle-based retailer turned four shipping containers into a 450-square-foot drive-thru and walk-up store in Tukwili, Wash.

According to Starbucks, the store was inspired by the company’s view outside the window of its Seattle-based headquarters. These containers, which are used to carry the brand’s coffees and teas around the world, often end up in scrap yards after about 20 years of service.

The company says it’s looking at ways to extend the reuse and recycle mentality of the project into other areas, such as prefabrication projects or exterior furniture.
