Target to Close Garden Centers

May use space for expanded grocery departments

Minneapolis-based Target will close all 262 of its garden centers in September.

"They are no longer a profitable business for Target and do not provide significant value for our guests," says Target spokeswoman Jenna Reck.

While the centers are closing, some of the products will remain, including garden tools, small bags of soil and lawn and patio furniture, inside the store.

The big-box retailer plans to repurpose the garden centers, depending on the needs of the individual stores, including using the space for groceries. The chain is spending $1 billion to remodel 340 of its stores this year.
