The Shave of Beverly Hills

Making the Cut

Beverly Hills has long been home to a legion of world-class boutiques, stores and restaurants. So when Adam Dishell and Bill Sanders decided to open a barbershop in that tony place, they knew it would need to be of the highest caliber.

“We wanted to create a place where men would come away with a feeling of transformation,” says Dishell. “That's what we experienced when we visited some of the best barbershops in the world – from New Orleans to London – during our business-planning process.”

Working with design/build firm Palladeo (Glendale, Calif.), the two co-owners created a 2000-square-foot space that houses a full-service barbershop and an adjoining retail area that sells high-end grooming products. Overall, the shop provides a modern take on an old-fashioned ideal – think Floyd's barbershop in Mayberry meets the styling salons of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” The barbershop section is home to century-old refurbished barber chairs with contrasting brushed stainless-steel hardware. Exposed brick walls feature display shelves holding both merchandise and plasma TVs showing sporting events.

The retail area features a backlit glass and dark wood cabinet holding merchandise on glass shelving that can be seen through the store's glass façade. And because no barbershop would be complete without its traditional icon, a red, white and blue striped pole serves as the centerpiece of the retail space.
