Uniqlo Closing US Stores

Five shuttered since January

Uniqlo (Tokyo) has quietly closed five U.S. stores since January, suggesting a slowing demand for its fast-fashion merchandise, reports The New York Post.

All of the stores were located in suburban shopping malls in Danbury, Conn.; Cherry Hill, N.J.; Willow Grove, Pa.; Northridge, Calif.; and Staten Island, N.Y.

“The brand penetration in big cities such as New York, San Francisco and Chicago is good, but not in the suburbs,” said the company’s chief executive, Tadashi Yanai, last year in an earnings call. The company told investors last year that it would be scaling back its U.S. expansion after opening 17 stores in 2014, according to The Post.
