U.S. Retail Hiring Still At All-Time High

Retail hiring is up, while customer spending remains somewhat weak, according to MarketWatch. Over the past year, retailers have filled roughly 300,000 positions, raising overall employment to 15.7 million: 26,000 people were hired in May, while another 33,000 workers were hired in June.

Despite this hiring boom, retail spending does not match the economy growth: U.S. retail sales have grown by a 1.6-percent rate through the first five months of 2015, compared to the national average of 5.1 percent over the past 20 years. Lower gas prices are contributing to weak retail sales, according to MarketWatch, as prices have fallen again since last year.
