VMSD magazine (Visual Merchandising Store Design) has officially announced the winners of its 2016 Excellence in Design and Visual Merchandising award, presented last night at the Planning and Visual Educational Partnership (PAVE) Gala in New York, during the annual Retail Design Collective event, hosted by the Shop! Association, Dec. 7-9.

The winners recognized by the magazine this year include Barneys New York’s Seventh Avenue flagship, Samsung 837 on Washington Street and Sonos’ inaugural flagship on Greene Street. Honoring the year’s standouts in New York City retail, each store was chosen based on its extraordinary visual merchandising and design techniques.

“This year’s awarded New York stores each represented the growing shift toward experiential spaces – the kind shoppers seek to become immersed in firsthand – while presenting elegant and innovative interior packages,” says Jennifer Acevedo, editor-in-chief, VMSD magazine. “We felt that the designs and merchandising techniques used in these stores will go on to inform many other retail spaces in the coming years.”

Matthew Mazzucca, vp of windows and interiors, Barneys New York, and Eslam Khalil, senior manager – store and visual design, Samsung Electronics America, were in attendance at the PAVE Gala to accept the crystal apple awards on behalf of their respective companies.

Last year’s winners included Joseph Abboud’s Madison Avenue flagship, Valentino’s Fifth Avenue flagship and Urban Outfitters’ Herald Square location.
