Interbrand (New York) released its 2014 Best Retail Brands Report in April, with Walmart topping both the North America and global lists, despite a 6 percent decline in brand value.

The global Best Retail Brands report ranks the top 50 North American and European retail brands by brand value, as well as the top retail brands from across Latin America and the Asia-Pacific. The report is produced in collaboration with Interbrand Design Forum (Dayton, Ohio).

The top five retail brands in North America maintained their positions from 2013: Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Amazon and CVS/pharmacy. Publix climbed into the top 10 for the first time, while Nordstrom fell to number 12.

Perhaps the biggest highlight is four companies that grew their value by more than 25 percent: Macy’s (+383 percent); Whole Foods (+173 percent); Amazon (+27 percent); and Cabela’s (+27 percent).

“Brands that are succeeding within this market all display a great understanding of human behavior that helps them meet consumer needs,” says Interbrand global chief marketing officer Graham Hales about the group’s impressive rankings climb. “More often than not, this helps their physical retail experiences coexist with their digital retail experiences in a holistic manner.”

In the global marketplace, H&M topped the list for Europe with a brand value of $18.2 billion. Woolworths led the Asia-Pacific region with a brand value of $4.9 billion. And Natura took first place in Latin America with a brand value of $3.2 billion.
