4 Easy Ways to Blend Hospitality and Retail in Your Space

When is a store more than a store? When it feels like home. That’s the subject of an eye-opening session on hospitality and retail at the International Retail Design Conference, Oct. 9-10 – and a trend we’re definitely watching here at VMSD.

Featuring speakers Lucas Viglione, Gastronomy Entrepreneur and Lawyer, Gabriela Jagodnik, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, MTVD Design Studio and Sharon Lessard, Chief Creative Officer, Ensemble, this immersive session will show attendees how hospitality and retail are beginning to blend and influence one another – and how to engage all your customers’ senses through thoughtful design.

If you’re considering adding elements of hospitality to your retail experience, these four budget-friendly tips are a great place to start.

Create a Comfortable Seating Area
One of the easiest ways to incorporate hospitality into your retail space is by adding a cozy seating area with magazines or catalogs related to your products. This provides a place for customers to take a break, make decisions or simply wait while their companions shop, enhancing their overall experience.

Offer Complimentary Refreshments
Another simple option that requires very little set-up is a small station with coffee, tea, water and perhaps a few snacks like cookies or fruit. Refreshments create a welcoming atmosphere and give customers an extra reason to stay and browse longer.

Host In-Store Events and Workshops
In-store events and experiences encourage customers to see your store as more than just a place to shop. Whether you host DIY demonstrations, showcase local talent or highlight key customers, you’ll engage your customers and provide your store with fantastic social media content.

Provide Personalized Customer Service
Make hospitality a part of your everyday interactions by offering personalized customer service. When your staff learns regulars’ names and offers customized recommendations based on past purchases or preferences, that personal touch can be a real difference-maker.

Coming to Kansas City? This year’s IRDC annual Retail Inspiration Tour will explore Country Club Plaza where you can find an example of retail blending with hospitality at the Capital One cafe. We hope to see you there!
