Apple Challenges Australian Supermarket Logo

Says stylized “W” is too similar to its iconic fruit symbol

Apple Inc. (Cupertino, Calif.) has filed a complaint with the Australian government’s intellectual property agency IP against Woolworths, an Australian supermarket chain. In question is the chain’s “W” logo that’s designed to look like peeled fruit – a design the technology giant thinks is too close to its own iconic apple with a bite out of it.

Apple’s concern is that if Woolworths extended the use of its logo to technological products, it would cause confusion to consumers and compromise Apple's image.

So far, Woolworths, which launched the logo in August 2008 as part of a refreshed campaign, has refused to back down.
