San Diego Dining Group will open AKA, an Asian-fusion restaurant, bar and lounge, today (Nov. 7) in that city’s historic Gaslamp Quarter. The restaurant, at 611 Fifth Ave., “promises to deliver an immersive dining and nightlife experience that will redefine San Diego’s culinary and entertainment landscape,” its backers say.

“Our mission at AKA is to reinvigorate the Gaslamp with a multisensory journey that revitalizes the spirit,” says Alessandro Minutella, co-founder of owner San Diego Dining Group, which also operates the Allegro, Greystone Steakhouse and Osteria Panevino restaurants in the downtown quarter.

According to published reports, the new restaurant’s high-profile locale is in a space most recently occupied by Lavo Italian, and a Searsucker location before that. In its coverage of the new space, SanDiegoville noted that AKA – which translates to “red” in Japanese – offers “a modern yet sophisticated ambiance, with inspiration drawn from iconic New York City establishments like Buddakan and Tao. The venue combines chic Asian-style decor, bold lighting and red accents that complement its name, crafting a space that seamlessly transitions from fine dining to an energetic nightlife destination.”

In addition to co-founders Minutella, Giancarlo Guttilla and Vincenzo Lo Verso at San Diego Dining Group, AKA’s team includes Chef Takuya Kudo, known for his Chinese, Japanese and Thai culinary offerings, mixologist Gerardo Bedolla and designer Cassandra Builer of Huntress Décor.
