The Barneys New York brand is looking to make a comeback. Authentic Brands Group (New York), which owns the Barneys name, is in development with an undisclosed operating partner to open a small-format Barneys store in Naples, Fla., in 2027, and is looking at other potential locations, people familiar with the situation told The Wall Street Journal.

Authentic is also considering reopening a full-scale Barneys store in its former Madison Avenue location, which is vacant. The department-store chain was founded in 1923 and closed all its U.S. stores in 2020 after filing for bankruptcy a second time.

Authentic bought Barneys’ intellectual property and licensed it to Saks Fifth Avenue, which had the exclusive retail rights in the U.S. Those rights reverted to Authentic when Saks filed for bankruptcy in January.

Women’s Wear Daily earlier reported some of the details of the plan to relaunch Barneys, the Journal noted.

When Saks had the rights, it operated Barneys shops at some of its department stores, including its Fifth Avenue flagship, and there are still nine Barneys stores in Japan, the business newspaper reported.
