BJ’s Wholesale Club (Marlborough, Mass.) is ending the year with a flurry of store openings. On the heels of the new locations it opened last month in Mesquite, Texas, and Foley, Ala., the retailer will open three more clubs in December. Two of those new clubs – in Springfield, Mass., and Sumter, S.C., will open Dec. 12, while another will debut Dec. 17 in Casselberry, Fla.

BJ’s sells merchandise, often in bulk and at discount prices, to members who pay an annual fee. Since its founding in 1984, the chain has grown to 257 clubs and 194 BJ’s Gas locations in 21 states. Its main competitors are Sam’s Club, a unit of Walmart Inc. that has about 820 locales total, including roughly 600 in the U.S., and Costco, which has about 920 clubs, most in the U.S. and Canada.
