Fashion retailer Aritzia (Vancouver, B.C.) has acquired Fred Segal’s famed Los Angeles boutique, report a variety of news sources, including Business of Fashion. The deal is viewed as another way for the Canadian retailer to boost its presence in the U.S., where it currently has about 75 boutiques. (It has about the same number of stores in its home country.)

Aritzia plans to revitalize the Melrose Avenue store and its ivy-covered façade, and turn the locale into “an entirely new, experiential destination,” the company said in a statement.
“Fred Segal has long been a cultural touchstone in Los Angeles — a place where creativity, community and style converge,” Aritzia CEO Jennifer Wong said in the statement.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction includes Fred Segal’s intellectual property (IP) and the company will lease the 8100-square-foot flagship.

The license for the Fred Segal name was most recently owned by Global Icons, which struggled to boost its business after the pandemic, BoF noted. That firm shuttered the brand’s two remaining stores in 2024 and returned its license to the Segal family, which in turn became the seller in the Aritzia transaction.
