The comforts of home are invading the retail scene as stores cozy up to intimate areas that offer a relaxing refuge for shoppers. And decorative lighting pairs perfectly with plush furnishings, giving these casual corners a warm, residential style.

“We’ll recommend hanging decorative pendants to emphasize seating areas or make the space feel more inviting, and clients will say, ‘You mean like Starbucks?’ ” says Martin Roberts, president of New York retail design firm Grid2. “Consumers remember it when retailers bring something decorative into a space. An artistic sconce or colored glass casts a warmer glow, provides pops of color and really makes a statement about your brand.”
