The battle for consumers’ refueling dollars is heating up. The latest salvo comes from Costco Wholesale Corp. (Issaquah, Wash.), which is planning its first standalone gas station, report a variety of news sources, including C-Store Dive.

The big-box giant is expected to begin building the fuel-only site in Mission Viejo, Calif., this fall, with an opening set for the following spring. The complex will feature a 17,200-square-foot gas canopy with 40 fueling positions. It will only be accessible to Costco Warehouse members, who will need their membership information to access the pumps, according to city planning documents. Once operational, Costco’s pumps will be competing with Circle K, Chevron and BP, all of which have fueling sites nearby.

“The project is a bold step for Costco, which appears to be investing more time and money into its gas station business,” C-Store Dive notes, “while also becoming more of a threat to traditional convenience retailers.”

It is not known if Costco has plans for additional such sites.
