Gourmet and specialty food retailer Bristol Farms (Carson, Calif.) has 15 stores in Southern California, and each one bears a local touch.

The upscale purveyor of everything from papayas to petite filet relishes being a canvas for local color. Its latest 35,000-square-foot store in Palm Desert, Calif., is no exception, harking back to a time when the desert city was a playground for such 1960s-era stars as Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and Jonathan Winters.

“Every Bristol Farms store is unique,” says Mike Mustin, executive vp of the Construct and Create divisions of Glendale, Calif.-based Palladeo.

The two Palladeo units, which have also worked on three other California locations for the gourmet grocer, were brought in to help the retailer lay its footprint in a space that had previously housed a grocery store. A reconstructed interior and façade, locally inspired décor items, quality fixtures and all-new surfaces and materials were all part of the blueprint.

“The installation of the décor elements was challenging at this store,” says Maurice Garcia, project manager for Palladeo. “Seismic and load calculations had to be considered due to the heavy weight of the items. And in some cases, Create had to design elements on-site and on the fly.”

Natural, desert-inspired hues mix with traces of 1960s style for a distinct look. A façade above the dairy section shows homes with architecture from that era, while murals paint a picture of local nature.

Bristol Farms, a unit of Minneapolis-based Supervalu Inc., prides itself on its merchandising and fixtures. The retailer’s layout includes intimate, stand-alone departments and quality fixtures and graphics that maximize product exposure and present food in an enticing manner.

For example, gourmet cheeses and olives are presented in elegant display cases and positioned under a suspended square-shaped covering with accent lighting. And the wine area is in a self-contained hut with a faux roof.

Signage is large, clean and contemporary, with brushed-brass letters on a warm wood backing. Furniture-quality fixtures are paired with modern-looking signage to enhance the floral and customer service departments.

“Internally, it was unanimous that this was the most complete store we’d ever done,” says Craig Ogaz, Bristol Farms’ director of operations development. “As thousands of customers came through the doors during opening week, the store exceeded same-store sales projections.”
