Sales growth better outside of U.S.

Several European-based luxury-goods retailers announced robustsales growth in 2000. But not because of their U.S. stores.

Giorgio Armani SpA (Milan) announced a sales increase of 20percent in 2000 from 1999, with continued growth anticipated for2001. Prada's sales increased 57 percent in 2000, and sales in thefirst half of January were up 31 percent, according to The WallStreet Journal. And Gucci's sales were up 30 percent in December.However, the fashion houses noted that holiday sales in their U.S.stores lagged behind their Asian and European stores.
