GameStop (Grapevine, Texas) has kicked off the new year with another round of store closings, report a variety of national and local news sources, including FastCompany. The video game seller has already shuttered 590 stores in the United States during its current fiscal year as part of what it describes as a “portfolio optimization review.”

“The video game retailer is closing stores in numerous states this month, according to local media reports, and emails and store signage shared by customers on social media, part of its ongoing effort to reduce costs and adapt to changes in shopping habits,” FastCompany reports.

At the beginning of 2025, GameStop reportedly had 2300-plus stores in the U.S. While the retailer has not disclosed just how many stores it’s shuttering to start 2026, published reports say that number could total 200. Local media outlets have reported on individual store closings in Topsham, Maine, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Topeka, Kansas, and elsewhere, FC notes.
